The marketplace for sustainably produced goods and services is significant and growing. It is also a priority for Government, with businesses required to increasingly ‘decarbonise’ their activities.

Concerns about the climate crisis and issues including plastic waste in our oceans drive customer behaviour, and trade buyers increasingly seek out suppliers that support their Corporate Social Responsibility objectives.

Client: Derwen Garden Centre
Sector: Horticulture | Retail

The Derwen is one of the finest independent garden centres in the UK. It is owned and run by the Joseph family, alongside the Dingle Nurseries, who have built the company over several generations into a significant grower and retailer of ornamental plants that are exported internationally.

This is a land based business that recognises its responsibility to the environment and we are delighted to work with them via the Tyfu Cymru project. This has so far involved a sustainability audit that highlighted areas reduce energy, fuel and water aswell as initiating projects to eliminate single use plastic and peat use.

Client: Food Centre Wales
Sector: Food & drink | Packaging & waste

Facilitating a panel discussion and chair of the Zero Waste conference in October 2018. The conference attracted speakers from leading retailers and large manufacturers and was attended by over 50 food and drink businesses from across Wales.

One-to-one consultancy sessions were held directly with businesses during the event and demand was so high that it led to delivering a series of masterclasses for delegates to learn how-to implement good practice in their businesses and across their respective supply chains (eg. Low Carbon Product Development, Sustainable Packaging, Process Efficiency, Embedding Ethics, Measuring Impacts, Communication), also how to align with Welsh Government legislation (specifically the Future Generations Act and Environment Act) and market drivers (such as provenance and alternatives to plastics).

Client: Pembrokeshire People First
Sector: Social Enterprise

Pembrokeshire People First is a social enterprise that provides advocacy, training and campaigning for adults with learning disabilities and autism. Facing increased competition for funding they are actively diversifying their activities and seeking to secure contracts with public sector clients as well as making themselves more visible to attract private sector sponsorship.

This was commissioned on behalf of Cwmpas (formerly Wales Cooperative Centre) via the Social Business Wales project to provide specialist support and advice. This involved providing leadership coaching to help set a vision for the organisation and support this with a sustainability policy and action plan.

“I have reviewed the policies and incorporated them into our staff handbook…Many thanks – practical and sensible things to work towards”

— Karen Chandler, Chief Officer, Pembrokeshire People First
